Raleigh, NC Roadtrip 2012 - Day 2

Day 2!

Today’s agenda was basically to reach the Great Smokey Mountains alive. We started the day by eating a hearty breakfast with Sarah and Jake at an old fashioned diner in Louisville, KY. Completely satisfied with our breakfast, it was time to hit the road.

Along the way we had to stop in Lexington, KY so I could get a box of Frosted Mini Wheats and Becca could grab some lotion. Random I know. Driving near Knoxville, TN we ran into some HEAVY downpours. I am adding this to my book of firsts….driving through the mountains in torrential downpours.

Our Campsite!
We finally reached the park around 4:30pm; just in time to grab a camping spot in the Elkmont campground by the river. However, there was one problem…I forgot to pack two essential items. A lighter to start the fire and rope to tie down our rain tarp…add those items to the expense log LOL!

Once our tent was up, we decided to head up to the highest point in the Great Smokey Mountains…Clingman’s Dome. Just like a typical day it was extremely foggy up at the top of the lookout tower, so we couldn’t see much. However, just as we were about to head down the mountain the clouds lifted. We now got the chance to see the picturesque views we went up there for.

We decided to spend the evening walking the streets in tourist trap Gatlinburg. We ate at a place called Shoney’s….it reminded us of a Perkins. Becca got a “Shoney’s Double Deluxe Burger” and I got a grilled cheese. Since we only munched on snacks for lunch, we were both really hungry because Becca DEVOURED her burger…hilarious!

After our little visit in Gatlinburg, we made our way back to the camp ground with liquor in our possession! You can’t camp without liquor…especially when you are only in your early 20s LOL. Did you know in TN grocery stores can sell beer but not liquor? Right after we got our camp fire lit it started to rain, so we made our way into the tent and played a few games of speed until calling it quits for the day. Day two completed!
